Recognition Award Descriptions

Merit Award
Recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the area of history education that make the teaching of Milwaukee history to elementary and secondary school students more interesting and more effective.

Commendation Award
Recognizes the best efforts of local historical societies and museums within Milwaukee County in the areas of exhibitions and programs.

Recognition Award
Recognizes the efforts of volunteers or organizations that make significant contributions to the operation of the Historical Society.

Gambrinus Prize
Named for the god of brewing, the Gambrinus Prize is awarded each year for the best book-length contribution to Milwaukee historiography. Recipients receive a small monetary award from a fund created by the Pabst Brewing Company in addition to the award certificate.

Marion G. Ogden Prize
Name for a devoted Historical Society Board Member , the Ogden Prize is presented annually to recognize the best article contributed for publication in Milwaukee History magazine during the preceding year.

Frederick I. Olson Preservation Award
Named in honor of legendary Historical Society Board Member Fred Olson, this award recognizes the efforts of individuals and organizations to preserve and protect historic architecture in Milwaukee County.

Courtland R. Conlee Community Service Award
Named for the Milwaukee Journal executive who devoted himself for many years to the Milwaukee County Historical Society, this award recognizes the efforts of individuals who make major contributions to preserving Milwaukee history over an entire career or lifetime.

Witness To History
Begun in 2003, this award seeks to honor those who have played a significant role in shaping the history of our community.
